Travelling from Fukuoka to Yufuin – via Trains, Highway Bus, Driving

Yufuin is one of the famous cities in Kyushu.
Apart from the natural landscape, those historical streets are very popular as well, not to mention the high-quality hot springs hotels there.
Many tourists would spend one or two days in Yufuin to enjoy their holidays.

If you would travel to Yufuin from Fukuoka, here are the 4 ways to get there.

1. JR Limited Express

It is the fastest way to get to Yufuin from Fukuoka.
If you are departing from Hakata, there are two types of Limited Express trains, they are “Yufuin no Mori” and “Yufu”.

JR Limited Express – “Yufuin no Mori”

This is a popular choice among tourists.
The train has a bar counter, where you can buy sweets and bento lunch boxes there.
Also, you can get souvenirs for your loved ones and friends from there.

As all seats on the train are reserved seating, don’t forget to book your seat before the journey.
If you are using the JR PASS, you can reserve your seat online or at the JR green counter.

JR Limited Express – “Yufu”

Without a bar counter, Yufu has reserved seating and free seating.
You can take any seats you want with JR PASS or easily book reserved seating with JR PASS.

2. JR Kyushu Railway

If you find the Limited Express is too expensive, you can take the local trains.
However, it would take a longer journey to get to Yufuin, you may even have to change trains.

Departing from Hakata, you have to take the local train to “Kurume Station”, change for Kyudai Main Line to “Yufuin Station”.
The whole journey requires around 3 hours.

Go Around Kyushu with JR PASS!

To get as much time as possible, many people would pick the transportation with the shortest travelling time.
To manage your travelling budget well, buying the JR PASS would be a smart move. 

With Northern Kyushu Rail Pass (from 12,000 yen) or All Kyushu Rail Pass (from 20,000 yen), you can travel to popular cities in Kyushu like Fukuoka, Yufuin, Beppu and Kumamoto.

3. Highway Bus

Another common choice of transportation would be highway bus.
There are 23 buses that travel from Hakata to Yufuin everyday.
You can board the bus in Hakata Bus Terminal, Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal and Fukuoka Airport, there is a high flexibility.

However, it would take a longer time to travel by bus.
Also, you have to reserve your seat beforehand.

4. Driving

Many people would choose to drive from Fukuoka to Yufuin.
You just need to rent a car and set the destination to “Yufuin Station” on your GPS.
Follow the GPS, you will arrive in Yufuin in 90 minutes with good traffic conditions. 

There are a few car parks near the rail station, it is convenient to drive there.
